Kane Roberts came to prominence back in the 80’s as Alice Cooper’s guitarist on albums ‘Constrictor’ and ‘Raise Your Fist and Yell’ – in addition he also co-wrote and played on ‘Bed of Nails’ from ‘Trash’.
As a solo artist he has kept himself busy releasing 5 solo albums and working with a plethora of acts from the music world. Now Kane is back with his 6th solo record ‘The New Normal’. Three years in the making and with a slew of special guests, the album is a tour de force of writing and performance.
As a relative newcomer to Kane’s music I didn’t really know what to expect, I wasn’t sure if it was going to sound old fashioned and dated, or if it would miss the mark by trying to be too modern. What we have is a perfect blend of old and new school metal working in perfect harmony that will appeal to fans old and new alike. Opener “King of the World” with its slow burn beginning to its fist pumping chorus, firmly stamps the intent of what this album is all about.
This record has so many stand out tracks that it’s genuinely hard to choose individual songs to tell you about… so with that being said I’ll start with the star studded ‘Beginning of the End’, vocal duties are shared by Alice Cooper and Alissa White-Gluz, who work perfectly together delivering a powerhouse performance on a deliciously heavy and melodic song. Next up is ‘Above and Beyond’ with yet another big name line-up including Kip Winger, is a powerfully hypnotic track that has an underlying 80’s vibe that also feels timeless in its execution.
So in essence we have an album that on paper is all style and no substance with its big name special guests, but that is so far from the truth. This album is beautifully written, exceptionally performed and perfectly recorded and would be at home in anyone’s music collection, proving yet again that there is still life and relevance in the old school yet.
‘The New Normal’ is out now on Frontiers Records.
