Jonny Lang is sick of biding his time and waiting for things to happen. Opener Make It Move is a message to those who feel ‘proactive’ is ‘pushy’ and a re-occuring sense of urgency underpins the sensational Signs.

Snakes has more than a hint of Vintage Trouble at its beating, powerful heart and the upbeat What You’re Made Of, built on a subtle Hammond melody, is funky rock and soul at its most affecting.

Lang’s first album in four years is long overdue but it’s been well worth the wait. Peel away the layers of creativity – lain dormant for far too long – and the rewards are tenfold. Intense vocals, mind blowing musicianship and admirable ambition make for one of the albums of the year.

This is blues. It’s rock. And most of all it’s a signpost for a career that seemed to be at a dangerously indifferent crossroads. The soaring solo on the brilliant Bitter End is the sound of a singer songwriter reborn and the soulful Stronger Together says it all.

Signs shows the way where Lang is concerned. Thank god he got here.
