THE LINE-UP

BUZZCOCKS
With their crisp melodies, biting lyrics, and driving guitars, Buzzcocks are known as one of the most influential bands to emerge in the initial wave of British punk rock. Largely eschewing politics, they instead brought an intense, brilliant vigor to the three-minute pop song, powered by Shelley’s alternately funny and anguished lyrics about adolescence and love, backed by melodies and hooks that were concise and memorable. The group’s powerful punk-pop proved to be enormously influential and timeless, with echoes of their sound resonating in bands like Hüsker Dü and Nirvana, along with almost every band who ever blended the hooks of pop with the energy of punk.
U.K. SUBS
One of the most important bands of the second wave of U.K. punk, the U.K. Subs were on the scene since the early days of British punk. But as the first wave of bands began to crumble, the U.K. Subs just got tougher and faster, and slowly rose to fame, finally breaking out in 1979 with the album that established their template, Another Kind of Blues. The group’s signature sound was stripped-down and anthemic British punk, not unlike early Clash but with a heavier attack, coupled with ranting vocals that merged anger with dark humor. U.K. Subs grew faster and leaner with the passage of time and a heavy metal influence edged into their music in the ’90s, but for folks who wanted their punk rock simple, forceful, and full of shout-along choruses, the band reliably delivered throughout a long and eventful career.
THE VAPORS
The Vapors were a British New Wave power pop band from Guildford, Surrey, England. After an abortive initial attempt at getting the group off the ground in 1978, singer/guitarist David Fenton managed to form a more cohesive and effective line-up for the Vapors in 1979.
ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE
The band officially started in 1980 as a four piece band, with original members, Animal, Magoo, Bones and Baggy. They played a few shows together at local venues and soon got a reputation for being an obnoxious band with a bad attitude. But within a short space of time members Bones and Baggy due to work and tour commitments were replaced by Winston and PJ and went on tour with the Damned. Now the band are firing on all cylinders, touring with bands such as Rancid and playing the big festivals like Download and Rebellion. The band are now playing live and recording doing what they do best’…swimming against the flow of the controlled music business’, again proving Punk is the last music rebellion and is still a major music force to be reckoned with.
CHELSEA
Led by vocalist and frontman Gene October, Chelsea were one of the pioneering bands on the British punk scene, with a tough sound and a populist outlook typified in songs like “Right to Work” and “Urban Kids.” They became an enduring presence in U.K. punk, and though the band sounded a bit faster and louder on latter-day albums, their commitment to the essential rudiments of first-wave U.K. punk never wavered. Chelsea have gone through so many personnel changes that October himself probably has trouble sorting them out, but he’s kept the band in front of audiences since the mid-’70s, with a pair of genuine pop stars (Billy Idol and Sting) briefly included in the line-up.
